Week 0/1 - CST 300
This was the first official week of the CSUMB CS Online program, but work began before the session even started. Prior to our first day, we met with our assigned groups in order to begin work on our first major assignment, creating a team resume and a mock company. Our group did our work primarily through Discord, which I though was really helpful since we all had different schedules and it was a place where we could just chat as needed. With the holidays things were especially busy, but we got through it and came up with a pretty great team name and company idea.
Beginning in week one, our assignments centered around getting familiar with the format of the course and beginning work on our industry analysis paper. Some of the topics that were discussed included the history of CSU Monterey Bay and collaboration. Specifically, we began learning more about teamwork through the Open Learning Initiative (OLI). Initially, we were required to do a pre-test for OLI that seemed to gauge are readiness to work as a group. The first OLI module was fairly short, but included an exercise on recognizing some poor collaboration behaviors. I learned more about recognizing these behaviors; even some that may seem trivial such as being late or distracted during the meeting can affect your teammates and the overall environment. The week ended with a team meeting on Discord to check-in and discuss the video "Mastering Online Group Work."
