CST 462S - Reflections

What went well? My experience with service learning was overall really good. The site I was assigned to was something I hadn't done before, which was to create social media content for a Teen Center. I feel like I've gained a new skill and was able to enjoy my service learning assignment.

What would you improve? I would improve the current structure of the course, in that it was optional to start the second week, but I feel it would be more beneficial to make the service learning due the week before the course ends that way we could focus on the paper the last week of the course.

What was the impactful part? The most impactful part for me was learning a new skill. I hadn't made any kind of marketing or social media material for a brand before, so it was fun to work on something that was outside of the realm of what I normally do. It wasn't necessarily related to coding, but it did provide an outlet for my creativity and was generally fun.

What challenges did you face? The main challenge was making sure I completed my hours on time and trying to get everything wrapped up by the end of the day. It's a little stressful making sure everything if completed and sent out within a few days, there isn't any room for error.

What advice do you have for future SL students? My main advice would be to try and start your service as soon as you can and possibly finish early if possible. Life happens and sometimes its easy to just say that you'll complete your hours the next week, but eventually it does pile on. The course goes by so quickly and before you know it, it ends. I would also that you get what you put in, try and step out of your comfort zone to do something new.
